Role: Art Director/Designer/Animator
The Day of the Western Sunrise is a Daliborka Films documentary directed by Keith Reimink that follows a Japanese fishing boat The Lucky Dragon No. 5 and it's fishermen who encounter Castle Bravo, a nuclear test conducted by the United States of America in 1954. From the blast to the devastating aftermath, the story is told from interviews of surviving fishermen and 3D animated flashbacks with illustrated characters that were rendered by Josh Lopata.
Josh introduced me to Keith in May of 2016. They were exploring different ways to tell these fishermen's story, and I was on the verge of revisiting the world of 3D design and animation. After many discussions and brainstorms we came up with a style that was able to capture the breadth of the story while staying approachable with a small team. This is one of those milestone projects that has challenged me and changed the way that I create. Without it, most of what you see on this website wouldn't have been possible. The Day of the Western Sunrise is in the final stages of production, and we are so we excited to share it with the world.
. The film is set to release winter, 2018.
